chinoiserie
Chinoiserie (a French term) was used during the 17th Century to reflect Chinese artistic influences. Chinoiserie’s use of fanciful imagery of an imaginary China to depict what peasant life might have been like. From the Renaissance to the 18th Century, Western designers have attempted to imitate the look of Chinese porcelain and the use of lacquer like materials and decoration onto furniture. The English used it extensively during the 18th century to fit onto cabinetry they were making. The English attempted to ship the lacquered panels with the Chinoiserie art from China to England. Because of the length of time it took to actually get it they decided to create their own. The artist copied delft china and different porcelain pieces and applied that lacquer art to furniture. Hence the Chinoiserie on furniture was born. Above, you can see some of our pieces with hand painted Chinoiserie in our Toscana finishes. I personally love mixing all periods and designs of furniture, especially Chinoiserie.
